The M-Shade began as a question: can a single piece of aluminum become both structure and surface?
From Concept to Form
The monolithic approach to luminaire design demands a different kind of engineering. Where traditional fixtures assemble multiple components, the M-Shade emerges from a single billet of aluminum, its form dictated by the constraints of the material and the demands of light.
Our design process started with the geometry. The subtle curvature that defines the M-Shade’s three-dimensional presence was not decorative — it was structural. Each curve serves a purpose: directing light downward while creating a visual presence that reads as both solid and light.
The Manufacturing Challenge
Creating a monolithic form from aluminum requires precision at every stage. The CNC milling process removes material to reveal the shape within, much like a sculptor revealing a figure from stone. But unlike sculpture, every surface must meet exacting tolerances for light distribution and thermal management.
The result is a luminaire that feels inevitable — as if it could not have been made any other way.
